Room of Tomorrow

Room of Tomorrow: The Rooms I Have Yet to Enter

Reflections on Widowhood Series: Exploring the Many Rooms of Life After Loss

As I have spent time in the many rooms of widowhood, I have realized something I didn’t understand in the beginning. I never really leave these rooms behind. I continue to enter them, sometimes without even realizing it.

Some days I spend time in the room of memories. Other days I find myself in the room of decisions, the room of gratitude, or the room of shared responsibilities. There are days when one room seems to occupy most of my thoughts, and other days when I move from one room to another without expecting to. Widowhood isn’t a journey where I leave one room forever and move on to the next. It is learning to live in a house where different rooms become part of everyday life.

As I think about tomorrow, I realize there are still rooms I have yet to enter. I don’t know what they will look like because I haven’t reached them yet. There will be decisions I haven’t had to make, experiences I haven’t had, and seasons of life I cannot yet imagine. Some of those rooms may be difficult. Others may hold unexpected blessings. Today, I simply don’t know.

That used to make me uncomfortable. I wanted to know what the future would look like. I wanted to know how everything would turn out. Widowhood has taught me that some questions can only be answered when we arrive at the moment we are living.

I have also learned that I don’t have to enter tomorrow’s room until tomorrow becomes today. There is enough grace for the room I am in today. When it is time to open another door, I will.

There are still holidays I have not experienced. There are still milestones, decisions, and changes that will come in the years ahead. I know there will be moments when I miss my husband as deeply as I do today because love does not have an expiration date. I also know there will be moments of joy, laughter, friendship, and purpose. Those things do not take away my grief. They simply remind me that life continues while love remains.

One thing widowhood has taught me is that I am stronger than I ever imagined, not because of my own strength, but because God has been faithful through every room I have entered. There have been days I didn’t think I could get through, yet somehow He gave me what I needed for that day. I have no reason to believe tomorrow will be any different.

I don’t know what rooms still lie ahead, but I do know this: I will not enter them alone. God will already be there, just as He has been in every room I have entered since my husband died.

I will also carry my husband with me. Not in the way I wish I could, but through the love we shared, the memories we made, and the life we built together. Those things have become part of who I am. No future room can ever take them away.

As I continue living in this house called widowhood, I know there will always be familiar rooms I return to. There will also be new rooms waiting for me when the time is right. I don’t need to know today what they will hold. I only need to trust God with the room I am in and the ones I have yet to enter.

The house of widowhood is not one I would have chosen, but it is where I live now. Within its walls are rooms of sorrow, gratitude, memories, decisions, shared responsibilities, and quiet moments of grace. There are also rooms I have not yet discovered. When the time comes, I will open those doors one at a time, trusting that the God who has been faithful in every room so far will be faithful in every room still to come.
